Curves are in: Why curves are still dominating interior design

One thing is for certain: curves are here to stay. Curves bring a sense of organic flow to a space, breaking the traditional rigidity of straight lines. However, adding curves in interior design is more than just aesthetics, it’s about how it makes you feel. Be it through furniture, architecture, or home decor, curves transform spaces into welcoming and harmonious ones.

So, the question is: what makes curves so lovable?

They create a sense of softness and comfort

Research has shown that individuals tend to find curved shapes more pleasant and beautiful than spaces with sharp angles. This is because curves create softness and comfort, which makes us feel cocooned, just like a warm embrace.

You might be surprised at how easily curves can change a space. Look around your home and consider swapping a straight-edged piece for a rounded one. Close your eyes and imagine how it will look... does it soften the space?

Adding visual interest and aesthetic appeal

Soft edges bring movement and enhance the flow in a space, as if you’re gently flowing through water. Curves are dynamic and fluid, breaking the coldness of geometric shapes.

There are a myriad of ways you can incorporate flowing curves into your home. Rounded doorways create a sense of grandeur and visual interest, immediately attracting attention. Curved walls and ceilings also break away from traditional square corners and act as focal points.

Rounded furniture, such as a coffee table or a rounded rug, will continue this sense of movement and also add a touch of sophistication and elegance. Let your imagination and creativity run wild!

Connection to nature

Biophilic design is a design approach that emphasises connecting individuals with nature in their living environments, and curves do just that. They copy the organic shapes found in nature, such as leaves and waves, encouraging a peaceful and serene atmosphere.

Just like how curves appear repeatedly in nature and are soothing to our souls, rounded edges in interiors fulfil the same function.

Conclusion

Curves are not going anywhere, and there’s a reason why they are so loved. They offer quiet comfort, add visual interest, and parallel the rhythms of nature. With their organic flow and cozy feel, we just can’t get enough of curves.
