How to create a home that reflects your personality

Updated: Nov 19

Your home quietly tells your story. For instance, what does your favourite book say about you? Or maybe a childhood toy that you’ve still kept around? In fact, studies have shown that our home decor choices can give insight into our personalities.

So, how to make your home truly you?

Collectables and memories...

Keep the items that you love in plain sight. When you step into your home and are greeted with your cherished objects, your space will feel like home.

For instance, these items could include photographs, art, souvenirs from travels, heirlooms, books, and so many more. You could even create a display case or arrange them on your shelf however you’d like.

Make room for your personal interests

Think about some of your passions and hobbies. If you like arts and crafts, you could consider dedicating a space and workstation for you to indulge in your passion.

It doesn’t have to be a whole room, a space is more than enough. It also lets your mind switch from ‘work mode’ to ‘relax mode’, knowing that that space is purely for you to let loose and enjoy your hobby.

Create a focal point with unique furniture

One’s choice of furniture can say a lot about someone, and it’s a great way to infuse a room with a treasured piece you love. Perhaps this could be a mid-century modern chair or a walnut wooden coffee table. It’s even more meaningful if you wish to use inherited furniture like an antique clock from your grandmother, or a shelf handmade by your dad, and so on.

Not only does it creates an immediate, focal point in the space, but it also tells meaningful stories and reflects you and your personality.

Incorporate your favourite colours and patterns

Committing to a certain colour or pattern in your home may seem daunting, but we can’t deny that they instantly set the tone of a room. You may be thinking that these colours and patterns have to be bright and bold, but they don’t have to. If you prefer a more minimalist design, you can consider incorporating muted and neutral colour schemes into your space.

Ambience and lighting

A subtle yet powerful way to add character to your space, lighting should not be underestimated. Do you prefer more natural light or artificial light? Maybe you’ve also seen those TikToks about how some people never turn on the “big light”.

What about the tone of the lighting - perhaps more warm or cool? These are some starting questions for you to consider what kind of lighting you think reflects your personality.

For example, stylish standing lamps or lamps on your bedside table can also reveal character.

Conclusion

All in all, there are a myriad of ways you can incorporate your identity into your space. Firstly, taking the time to choose your colour palette and textures is a great way to express your aesthetics. Having heartfelt items and furniture that hold cherished memories makes your home unique to you. Last but not least, other simple touches like lighting can transform your home into one that reflects your personality.

Choosing a new bed or mattress can be surprisingly confusing with all the different size names like Queen, King, California King, Full, Twin XL, etc! If you want to make an informed decision, it’s super helpful to look at Bed Sizes and Mattress Dimensions laid out clearly. Seeing the exact width and length measurements side-by-side helps you visualize how much space each size actually offers and whether it will fit comfortably in your room. It can save you from a costly mistake of buying a bed that's too big or too small for your needs.
